Amidst escalating tensions, the US Issued unofficial deadline to Israel, urging the conclusion of its military operations in Gaza against Hamas by the end of 2023.
While reports hinted at a specific timeline shared by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken during a recent meeting, clarification from US Deputy National Security Adviser Jon Finer emphasized that no “firm deadline” had been officially set.
The communication transpired as Israeli officials outlined an extended timeline for the ongoing conflict in southern Gaza. Expressing displeasure over the prolonged engagement, Blinken stressed the urgency of wrapping up operations, cautioning Israel about its limited international support.
However, Israel seems intent on pursuing its military objectives independently, despite external pressures. Officials underscored the necessity of entering Gaza, targeting terror tunnels, and addressing Hamas’s use of hospitals as command and control centers. Israel remains committed to achieving a decisive victory, even if it means defying advice from its key ally, the United States.
Adding complexity to the situation is the ongoing skirmish between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group on the northern border. The US is particularly concerned about potential hostilities in this region and aims to prevent the Israel-Hamas conflict from drawing in Iran and Lebanon.
Hezbollah and Israel have exchanged cross-border fire, resulting in casualties on both sides. Concerns persist that Israel might shift its focus to the northern border, echoing sentiments expressed by Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. He emphasized the importance of driving Hezbollah away from the Lebanese border, aligning with UN Resolution 1701 post the 2006 Lebanon war.
However, Hezbollah’s failure to comply with these terms, maintaining its military presence in southern Lebanon overlooking Israel’s northern border, has led to increased rocket attacks and cross-border firing since October 7, complicating regional dynamics.
